BROKEN (FRACTURED) DOUBLE J STENT

This is one of the complications of long forgotten ureteric stents. This 55 years old male presented with recurrent bouts of urinary tract infection and pain in the left lumbar region. About 4 years ago he had undergone left pyelolithotomy. A plain X-Ray KUB showed a few radio-opaque shadows in the left lumbar region along with a double J stent. The stent was found broken along its length with one loop lying separately in the bladder and the other in the pelvis. The portion in the ureter was also broken at two places. The patient was in fact unaware of the stent. Under general anaesthesia the loop in the bladder was removed with a cystoscope and all the rest of the pieces were removed by ureterorenoscope. The ureteric stents can cause many problems, so it is the duty of the treating urologist to inform the patient about its removal plan.
