To Dr. Anis ur Rehman, who wrote a paper on Guillain-Barre Syndrome Sept. 2007. Please help if you can. please forward if necessary. My friend has a 9 year old son who had a very severe viral flu, with vomiting and diarrhea, and later, his half sister developed the same symptoms. By the time they were seen by a doctor, the sons symptoms had subsided, and the daughters were acute. The daughter was given Tamiflu to alleviate the viral flu symptoms. The son was not. Within a few days, the son developed leg pain, and muscle weakness in his legs. He became unable to walk. His pediatrician suspected a pediatric onset rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis runs in the family of their mother, who has several close relatives with RA. He was eventually determined to have Guillain Barre Syndrome, but has a very severe case, with near complete paralysis, he cannot breathe or swallow on his own, but can blink his eyes, his lungs do not work but his heart is beating on its own. His blood pressure is very high, off and on, and his pulse rate has gotten up to 190 plus, with little or no efficacy to the attempted drug therapies. He is intubated and on a feeding tube in ICU in Cook Childrens Hospital in Ft. Worth, Texas, USA. He also has the additional complication of pneumonia and some fever, with his oxygen levels even intubated, dipping down to 80. We fear for his life. He has been in the ICU since late on Friday, December 4. Last night his sister had a recurrence of the vomiting she had last week, and now this morning is complaining of her feet and legs aching. Could this be GBS. Is she more likely to have GBS due to her relationship to the mother of them both, and her familial occurrence of it. Please, any information could be helpful. I am a medical student of pakistan Here In cuba .... Our method of study is totally different .... The topics are weekly based...
